Callie has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in a wide variety of engineering and software areas, including those related to medical devices such as surgical robotic systems and imaging systems (CT, MRI, Microwave, Ultrasound), laboratory instrumentation (chromatography systems, spectrometry systems, assay analysis devices, electronic pipettes), software (control algorithms, image processing, signal processing, data processing), communication systems, power systems, antennas, and mechanical devices such as peristaltic pumps and pipettes.

In addition to preparing and prosecuting patent applications, Callie has extensive experience in the following areas:
◦Preparation of appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. For example, Callie prepared an appeal brief in a case filed under accelerated examination in which the Examiner rejected the independent claims. The Board's decision reversed all of the Examiner's rejections.
◦Conduct of freedom-to-operate analyses. For example, Callie has conducted freedom-to-operate analyses resulting in product design recommendations.
◦Preparation of invalidity and non-infringement opinions. For example, Callie prepared over a dozen opinions related to patents in the area of robotic surgical devices as part of a new product development process.
◦Conduct of patent mining analysis. For example, Callie analyzed a diverse portfolio of patents related to various aspects of web based systems to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each patent prior to licensing discussions.
◦Resolution of inventorship disputes. For example, Callie assisted in the resolution of an inventorship dispute that arose between a client and a university professor.
◦Provision of technical and legal consultation in patent infringement litigation for both plaintiffs and defendants. For example, in analyzing the patents asserted in one case, Callie identified issues related to inequitable conduct, indefiniteness, and joint infringement, which facilitated settlement negotiations.


Callie's technical expertise includes 16 years as a software developer. As a lead developer and Project Manager, she designed the Advanced Subsystem, Element, and System Simulation (ASESS), a simulation of ground, space, and air based sensors and weapons. ASESS utilizes many of the latest simulation development technologies such as object oriented C++, a reusable, highly modular framework, the High Level Architecture, and XML.

In addition to being the project lead, Callie developed the radar models including the pulse schedulers, data and signal processing algorithms, and resource management algorithms. Callie also developed the satellite orbital element set flight models and the 3-degree of freedom (DoF), and 6-DoF missile flight models for thrusting and non-thrusting bodies as well as the earth atmosphere, terrain, gravitation, and rotation models used to simulate the sensor and flight model dynamics. Callie also developed the math library including coordinate system transformation functions and integration algorithms.

Callie also conducted numerous performance analyses of various radar and missile systems using simulations such as ASESS.

Callie also assisted in the development of an International emergency management planning exercise consisting of emergency responder teams from Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia as part of NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) program. Callie assisted the Slovakian responder team during the exercise conducted in L'Viv Ukraine using geographic information system software.

Callie designed and developed a software configuration management system for a Test Engineering Department to conform with ISO standards using the Perl, KSH, C, and C++ languages. The software placed under configuration management tested the hardware and software components of the high-end graphics computers that the company manufactured.
