Kate Legge is the Firm’s Practice Group Chair, Business Counseling and Employment Law and was part of the founding team of Griesing Law, LLC. Prior to working at Griesing Law, Kate worked at two AmLaw 100 law firms. She successfully represents both public and closely held entrepreneurial companies, locally and nationwide, in complex commercial litigation, business counseling, intellectual property and new media matters, including trade secret, copyright, unfair competition and trademark-related disputes. Kate has represented multiple clients in high stakes litigation on a range of legal issues, including successfully achieving temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions in trade secrets and breach of confidentiality actions.
In addition, Kate represents Fortune 1000 companies and privately held companies on a wide range of business issues. In particular, she has drafted and negotiated vendor/supplier agreements, buy/sell agreements, independent contractor/consulting agreements, licensing (trademark, copyright and software) agreements, privacy policies, joint venture agreements, and client services agreements, among other transactional agreements.
Kate also acts as outside general counsel for smaller businesses and non-profit organizations who do not have in-house legal counsel. For those clients she assists business owners proactively identify and assess the legal issues that they face daily. In this role, Kate advises on employment issues, including hiring and firing procedures, workplace trainings, drafting and revising employee handbooks, drafting independent contractor/consulting/work for hire agreements, and considering potential liability from improper employment practices. She reviews existing contracts and negotiates and drafts contracts for business transactions. Kate also advises her clients on areas related to new media, intellectual property, e-commerce, online content protection and infringement, software development, website terms, and social media legal risks.
Finally, Kate helps both large and small companies protect their valuable intellectual property assets by conducting intellectual property audits, developing and implementing comprehensive internal policies to safeguard proprietary information, and drafting the necessary agreements with vendors, independent contractors and employees to ensure that clients own and control their assets. She also assists clients with securing and policing their trademarks. She has particular experience in assisting and counseling businesses in the financial services, real estate, hospitality, telecommunications, insurance and technology industries.
Kate has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star from 2010-2012. She is also a highly sought speaker and published author on legal and business topics. Kate graduated from Bowdoin College, cum laude, and from American University, Washington College of Law, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, where she served as Senior Articles editor for the AMERICAN UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL LAW REVIEW. Kate also worked for the United States Department of Justice, Environmental Crimes Section and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
