The Labor and Employment Practice Area Committee Presents:

Independent Contractors and Interns: The High Price of Misclassification

Businesses are increasingly using contract workers to gain business and workplace flexibility and lower payroll and benefits costs. But classifying workers as independent contractors can pose significant legal risks for businesses. In fact, brand-new guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor suggests that "most workers are employees." Employers' internship programs have also come under fire, with a spate of lawsuits alleging that most unpaid interns really are employees. In this webinar, we will take a look at recent federal and California legal developments regarding independent contractors and unpaid interns and provide a framework for setting realistic -- and compliant -- company policies around worker classification.
